Where to stay in Martinique: choose a base around your journeys
The best area is different for a first night, a week of beaches or a hiking itinerary. Put your priority days on a map before comparing accommodation.

Start by marking the three days that matter most on a map. If they cluster in the south, a room in the middle chosen only because it appears equally distant from everything may add unnecessary driving every day. If your plans are split between Mount Pelée, Fort-de-France and Caravelle, a single beach base at the far southern end can become tiring.
The accommodation search above opens availability around Fort-de-France. Use it after choosing an area, then adapt your search if another town fits your itinerary better.
Compare the main areas
| Area | Practical advantages | Less suitable if… |
|---|---|---|
| Fort-de-France / central Martinique | Urban heritage, central transport, connections and services | You want to step straight onto a southern beach every morning |
| Les Trois-Îlets / the bay | A choice of neighbourhoods, access to the southern Caribbean coast and some ferry links | Mount Pelée or the north Atlantic is your overriding priority |
| Les Anses-d’Arlet / Le Diamant | Coves, southern Caribbean towns and a coastal setting | You have frequent appointments in the centre at busy times |
| Sainte-Anne / Le Marin | Les Salines, beaches and southern activities | Several days are devoted to Saint-Pierre or Caravelle |
| Saint-Pierre / Le Carbet | History, volcanic landscapes and access to the Caribbean north | Southern beaches and the airport dominate a very short stay |
| Tartane / La Trinité | Caravelle and the Atlantic coast | You mainly want calm coves on the Caribbean coast |
Municipal names can cover several separate neighbourhoods. A listing “in Les Trois-Îlets” does not prove it is within walking distance of the ferry landing you want; a Sainte-Anne address does not mean it borders Les Salines.
One base or two?
Keep one base
Choose this when your itinerary is intentionally light, your priority days sit within the same half of the island, or repacking would be a serious constraint. Accept that a more distant excursion will start early, and do not attach a second major activity to that day.
Split the stay
Two bases can make sense when combining north and south. The change needs to save more road time than it adds in logistics. Check departure and arrival times and where luggage can be kept between the two stays.
Check the address, not just the view
Open the exact address on a map and examine:
- the access road and actual parking arrangement;
- walking distance to the town, beach or stop;
- the gradient and lighting on the return;
- possible noise from the road, waterfront or a nearby venue;
- steps between the street and the room;
- the fallback if you arrive after the stated check-in time.
“Close to the beach” should be measured to a public access point, not to the blue edge shown on a map.
Questions that prevent unpleasant surprises
Air conditioning and ventilation
Ask which rooms are air-conditioned, whether the equipment operates at night and what happens if it fails. “Air-conditioned apartment” may refer only to the bedrooms.
Water, kitchen and electricity
For a self-catering property, check the kitchen equipment, cold-food storage and any instructions the host provides during a service disruption. Do not assume that a photograph shows every utensil available.
Parking
“Parking available” might mean a private bay, a tight courtyard or the street. Ask whether a place is reserved, suitable for your vehicle’s size and accessible without a difficult manoeuvre.
Accessibility
Ask measurable questions: the step at the entrance, door width, shower arrangement, lift, slope from the parking space and clearance around the bed. An “accessible” tick box does not replace these dimensions.
Mosquitoes and outdoor areas
Ask whether openings have mosquito screens and how they close. Follow protective measures recommended by health authorities, particularly when an alert is active.
Read the total price and conditions
Before confirming, check:
- currency and total amount;
- taxes and compulsory fees;
- payment schedule;
- deposit or security deposit and its return conditions;
- cancellation and amendment terms;
- the exact number of guests admitted;
- check-in time and procedure;
- the identity of the supplier displayed at payment.
Keep the confirmation, address and useful telephone number available offline. Do not send payment outside the stated process merely because a message creates a sense of urgency.
Verify the area with local sources
The Comité Martiniquais du Tourisme town guides help identify points of interest around an address. Then use Martinique Mobilités to test a real journey at a realistic time.
The final choice should connect four things: exact location, transport, booking terms and priority days. A beautiful sea view does not compensate for two long return journeys every day.
